Meat Free Mondays Worldwide/What Are the Benefits For the Environment?

That a vegetarian diet is good for the environment and the climate is being discussed in scientific publications more and more often. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), livestock production is responsible for 18% of all global greenhouse emissions. And happily, there are more and more people who are reacting to this fact.

For example, more and more people in Austria, especially young people, eat no meat. This was observed by the nutrition advisor to the Salzburg regional health insurance companies. Europe-wide, Austria is presently in fourth place with its percentage of vegetarians. Five percent avoid meat.

On May 13, 2009 the Belgian city of Ghent, one of 370 European climate cities, was the first city worldwide to announce a meatless weekday. As a contribution in the fight against climate change, vegetarian menus are offered in schools and city offices on Thursdays. A vegetarian city map is available and 1500 restaurants have received free pamphlets on vegetarian cooking. Vegetarian cooking courses are offered to private persons as well as to chefs. The restaurants operated by the city of Ghent have already expanded the number of vegetarian dishes they offer.

Other Belgian cities have said they are interested in following Ghent’s example.

Paul McCartney has now suggested a meat free day worldwide. In London, on June 15, 2009, the environment protector and former Beatles singer called for a meatless Monday to protect the environment. The abstention from meat on Mondays should be very easy, because too much is eaten on weekends anyway. And instead of working this off in the fitness studio, one could just as well have a meat free Monday.

McCartney stated: “If the consumption of meat were to be reduced just one day in the week, the earth would seriously profit form this.”
