As the parent of a teenager it's easy to fall into trying to be a bigger friend than parent to the teen, don't let this happen. Many parents fall into the trap of trying so hard to remain close to their teenagers that they simply let them do whatever they want. You may not realize it but your teen does want your advice and need your guidance whether they want to admit it or not. Your teenagers will still need some limits for their safety and you must provide them because noone else will. In order to keep them from getting into trouble with the law or teachers at school these limits are necessary. If you want to keep from appearing like a prison warden you'll want to carefully pick your battles and let them know you really do care what happens to them.
Being a good parent of a teenager means knowing your teens. Times are not what they were when you were a teenager, which is why you need to know what they are up to. Friends, music and tv shows are among the things you'll need to know about your teen. Not knowing what they are up to makes communication that much more difficult if not impossible.
